ICHE had its first convention Movie Night last year. After a day brimming with teaching and shopping it's nice to do something to relax and unwind. No one is anxious though to head off when so much fellowship is still to be had with new friends.
Gather a couple of families and enjoy camaraderie over supper and then join us in the Seminar room for a smorgasbord of videos created by homeschoolers from across the country. We will be showing all new trailers, claymation and stop animation shorts, competition entries and longer features.
As a special treat at this year's movie night, Cedric Saunders will preform a live presentation of "David and Goliath". Written for children and enjoyed by adults, Cedric will be David, Goliath, King Saul, and many other characters to illustrate how God can use even a youth to conquer insurmountable odds.
Here's a peek at one of last year's shorts.
Two of the four young men who made this as an entry in the Christian Filmmakers 24 hour competition, are volunteers here at the convention.

If you’re anything like me, a second generation homeschooler, you may be debating with yourself whether or not to come to the State Convention. You already know a lot about homeschooling (from experience!) and you've heard a lot of the big name speakers. In my case, I've heard almost all of the popular speakers, met many of them, and talked over meals with quite a few. I've experienced it, seen others do it, and heard all the pros and cons relating to almost every method and technique. So why am I still excited about coming to this year's State Convention? Here are a couple reasons.
I hear things differently now! Yes, I may have heard Mr. Well-Known Speaker back in 1997, but I'm at a different stage of life now. My problems, questions and needs are very different than they were thirteen years ago. The same material, and things that didn't apply then might be just what I now need to hear. Chances are that Mr. Well-Known Speaker has learned some things since 1997 too! He might have some different insights to share.
I need it! I still have a lot to learn, but there is an aspect to the Convention that doesn't have anything to do with learning information. I need to be refreshed and challenged to keep growing. It's kind of like going to church. I don't necessarily hear something new every week but I need to be reminded of what I know, I need the encouragement of being with other believers and challenge it all brings to continue walking and growing in my faith. The benefits are of a similar kind.
It's not just for me! There are opportunities for giving too. It might be encouraging a struggling parent, a heart to heart talk with a young teenager, the opportunity to share with someone considering home education, or simply giving a smile and greeting to someone who looks like they feel out of place. Being there gives me the chance to fill a need for someone else. We need each other, and as someone who has been homeschooled, I have a unique ability to sh
are with and encourage others.
It's my "vote" on what's important. I could spend my weekend and my money in local stores or supporting the work of some actor who would be horrified to learn that people like me actually exist. But personally, I think it's a pretty good investment to help families get the support and training they need in teaching and discipling their kids, which is, after all, where the registration fees go. I'm blessed and they're blessed - money well spent.
There's a few of the reasons why I, as a home school graduate, still attend the ICHE State Convention. I hope you will too - perhaps I'll see you there!

.... then you need to attend this year's Illinois Christian Home Educators State Convention.
You will be fed -- in more ways than one.....

.... and refreshed.

I will admit, the sights were impressive. I was told that over 13,000 people were in attendance! Upon our arrival, we managed our way through the crowds to obtain our registration packet and eagerly sat down with our schedules to pour over the information. Standard academic sessions were listed but what I wanted the most to see was who the keynote speakers would be along with their topics. I assumed that what I needed the most from the conference would be available based on my experiences with ICHE and what they provided. Unfortunately, my assumptions were incorrect. My heart sank when I realized that there were no keynote addresses scheduled! You can imagine my disappointment when I realized that the longed for “spiritual shot in the arm” wouldn’t be received this time around.
Why am I sharing this with you? Well – it’s because I want you to avoid making the same mistake I did. I think I fell into the trap of the “grass is always greener” in thinking that this conference was somehow better than the one presented by ICHE. I realized that the conference experience is more than just attending academic sessions presented by the “big names” in the homeschooling world. I missed the spiritual awakening that occurs in my heart when God’s word is preached as it pertains to our “marching orders” for our families. I missed the camaraderie that occurs when you run into fellow homeschooling friends and you share your excitement about how God is working in you through the process of the conference. I missed the feeling that homeschooling was something more than just an academic pursuit – it’s the pursuit of God and His will for our families’ lives.

Thank you everyone on the ICHE staff that makes this wonderful conference possible.
