This Article was edited and rewritten, with permission, from Amy Dunaway’s original article titled: An Introduction to the Individualized Education Plan for Home Educators.
  • A Practical Guide to Writing Goals and Objectives, by Fran Steenburgen Glib – The purpose of this book is to assist the special education teacher at any level in diagnosing individual needs; writing objective for individual needs; and measuring individual progress. This is a good guide for parents in writing an IEP!
  • How to Write An IEP, Third Edition, by John Arena. – An excellent, user friendly resource. It is geared for families who are dealing with school districts, but homeschooling families who want to learn about the IEP and write their own will find this book a great help. It is very reasonably priced, and many libraries carry it.

  • The IEP Manual for the Homeschooled Handicapped Student, by Jim & Debby Mills – Here is an IEP Planner for the special needs student that works! Setting up a professional looking program for your disabled child is now understandable and easy with this fill-in the blank format. This approach is balanced and comprehensive without being overwhelming. Their manual shows how to document daily living skills that will be useful in the home and community for the child that can’t use a traditional curriculum and also shows how to document the assistance of siblings. . Debby's insight into homeschooling an older child with special needs will also be especially helpful to those of us whose children are just approaching the junior high and high school years and need a significantly modified approach to schooling. While academic skills are functionally taught within this type of IEP, this manual could be a useful addition to any academic curriculum.   • Brigance – Has developmental scales for all ages and can be found at Curriculum Associates, 1-800-225-0248 (for catalog). The website is: http://www.curriculumassociates.com. HSLDA rents them to member families for $31. This includes the results booklet, which you keep, and shipping and handling. HSLDA also requires a refundable fee to insure that the scales are returned in good condition and in a timely fashion. Contact HSLDA at http://www.hslda.org.
  • HELP (Hawaii Early Learning Profile) Series – They also publish Assessment Stands (an inventory) and activities for learning for early education and elementary school ages. VORT Corporation 650-322-8282 or on the web at http://www.vort.com.
  • Skills Evaluation by Rebecca Avery – A framework of skills for K-6th grades. Available in many homeschooling catalogs.
  • Learning Objectives for Grades Kindergarten Through Eight published by Hewitt Services – Available at http://hewitthomeschooling.com
