  • Pyramid Educational Consultants – Picture Exchange Communication System or PECS? These are cards which may be purchased or made at home (using photos from film or digital camera, preferable laminated). It is a very effective communication system that is being used with not only individuals with autism, but with others who have low verbal skills or abilities. The individual is taught to make requests using little picture cards. These cards may be placed in strategic places throughout the house. Some may be kept on the fridge, for example, and picture food/drink items such hotdogs, juice, etc. Some families keep their PECS cards in a binder and organize them by subject (food, toys, activities, etc.). PECS cards may also be used to help build a visual schedule to help with transitions. Studies have shown that in autistic individuals in particular this is an effective tool and may actually help develop language acquisition rather than hinder it, as it is felt most spectrum individuals actually "think in pictures" rather than in words. The PECS concept was developed at Pyramid Educational Consultants and premade cards may be purchased.

Figural-learners are all children in the concrete, preliterate or non-literate stage. LOCAN uses picture-characters (or glyphs) to stand for words. One picture-character=one word. The printed word is then added to the glyphs and eventually the glyph is removed. Has been effective with special needs groups. Find examples at www.soisystems.com/locan.html
